Color blindness is a reduced ability to distinguish between colors when compared to the standard for normal human color vision. When a person is color blind, also called color vision deficiency (CVD), they usually have difficulty distinguishing between certain colors such as yellow and orange, green and brown, pink and gray, or blue and purple. These confusions are typical of what is called “red-green color blindness,” which includes protan-type CVD (protanomaly and protanopia) and deutan-type CVD (deuteranomaly and deuteranopia).
EnChroma develops optical lens technology that selectively filters out wavelengths of light at the point where this confusion or excessive overlap of color sensitivity occurs. Our lenses are designed for the overwhelmingly most common forms of red-green colorblindness, Protanomaly and Deuteranomaly, which are caused when the light wavelength sensitivities of the long (red) or medium (green) color sensing cones of the eyes overlap more than those with normal color vision. This alters the signal ratios produced by the 6-7 million cones that are sent to the brain, and then compared and contrasted by the brain to produce perception of color. The signal alteration reduces the range of perceivable colors by up to 90% and causes color confusion.
Similar to how audio filters in headphones or earbuds can reduce background noise by filtering specific sound waves, our notch-filter technology selectively filters specific lightwaves across a 300nm wide range, along with their intensity, to improve the long and medium wavelength color signal ratios to help account for the overlap, and increase the visible range of colors. Approximately 80% of people with red-green color blindness will see an expanded range of visible colors and distinguish shades more accurately. The glasses are not a cure for color blindness and are not designed for tritans, dichromats or monochromats as we state on our website. We have hundreds of thousands of satisfied customers.
