The Sixth Sense – A Mobility Aid for People with Visual Impairments

The Sixth Sense is a wearable device designed for blind and visually impaired individuals. It helps users move more safely and independently in everyday life — without needing to use their hands. The device detects obstacles above ground level and immediately alerts the user through vibrations or voice prompts. This allows users to know exactly when something is in their path and how far away it is.

In addition, users can enter a route via an app. The device then uses GPS to guide them with clear directional and distance cues. The navigation is controlled via Bluetooth — allowing users to start, pause, or repeat instructions easily. There are no wires or external batteries needed. Everything is built into a lightweight, comfortable device that is worn like a regular pair of headphones. While the device works without navigation (providing obstacle alerts), GPS route guidance requires a connected smartphone.

The product is ideal for people with visual impairments and can be used in everyday situations such as:

  • Walking outdoors, where it warns of low-hanging branches or signs.

  • Commuting, by helping navigate streets and train stations safely.

  • Exploring a new city independently, without needing assistance.

The Sixth Sense was developed in Vienna and London and tested extensively — with over 100 hours of user trials. It is expected to launch in September 2025.

Hope Tech CEO Brian Mwenda and CRO Laura Wissiak were named to the Forbes 30 Under 30 Europe 2025 list in the Social Impact category for their work on this product.
