feelSpace naviGürtel® (orientation belt)
Description
The feelSpace naviGürtel® is a tactile orientation system for blind and visually impaired people. The assistive device helps users perceive directions and routes through vibration signals around the waist. The belt combines an integrated compass with smartphone-based navigation and is designed to enable more independent and safer mobility in everyday life.
The belt uses 16 vibration units arranged around the body, enabling 360° directional perception. In compass mode, the naviBelt continuously indicates the direction of north. This helps users walk in a straighter line, cross streets or open spaces more effectively, and reorient themselves more easily after encountering obstacles. Via Bluetooth, the belt can be connected to the accessible feelSpace app. The app offers navigation features, destination search, beeline guidance, favorites management, as well as speech and VoiceOver support. Navigation instructions can be provided through tactile, visual, and optional audio feedback.
The feelSpace naviGürtel® is specifically designed for blind and visually impaired people who want to improve their orientation in public spaces. The user’s hands and ears remain free, allowing the belt to be used alongside a white cane or guide dog. According to the manufacturer, however, the system is not intended to replace traditional mobility aids.
Compared to conventional navigation systems with audio output, the naviBelt relies on continuous tactile feedback through vibrations. This is intended to help users maintain greater awareness of their surroundings. According to the manufacturer, the system is intuitive to use and does not require extensive technical knowledge. The belt is recognized as an assistive device and can be applied for through health insurance providers.
